Napue v. Illinois

In Napue v. Illinois (1959) 360 U.S. 264, the People's principal witness, who was serving a 199-year sentence for the same murder, testified in response to the inquiry by the prosecutor that he had received no consideration in return for his testimony. That testimony, however, was false, because the prosecutor had in fact promised him a reduced sentence for his testimony, and the prosecutor "did nothing to correct the witness' false testimony."
