In Plessy v. Ferguson (163 U.S. 537 [1896]), the Supreme Court gave constitutional protection to the concept of "separate but equal" facilities for blacks and whites. "If one race be inferior to the other socially, the Constitution of the United States cannot put them on the same plane." (Plessy at 551-552.)
