United States v. Villamonte-Marquez

In United States v. Villamonte-Marquez, 462 U.S. 579, 588, 103 S. Ct. 2573, 2579, 77 L. Ed. 2d 22 (1983), the Supreme Court addressed the federal statute permitting random stops of seagoing vessels. The Court considered the lack of reasonable alternatives for determining if ships are in compliance with the law. Unlike cars, the Court explained, boats have no obvious stickers or license plates which can confirm that they are in compliance with the law. Villamonte-Marquez, 462 U.S. at 590, 103 S. Ct. at 2580.
