Jamshid-Negad v. Kessler

In Jamshid-Negad v. Kessler (1993) 15 Cal.App.4th 1704, the plaintiffs brought an action against the non-resident defendants for negligent supervision of their minor son. A California statute holds parents liable for their children's willful misconduct. The court observed that the statute was a "manifestation of the state's exceptional treatment of an effect caused in the state by an out-of-state act." (Id. at p. 1709.) The court concluded that the defendants had "invoked the benefits and protections of California law in connection with their son's residency" by allowing him to attend the university and paying his tuition.
