In Barney v. State, 786 P.2d 925 (Alaska App. 1990) the Court upheld a 10-year term to serve for manslaughter and second-degree assault under Alaska's current criminal code. Barney was speeding, drove through a red light, and struck another car -- killing the driver and seriously injuring the passenger. Barney was twenty-six-years old, had an extensive traffic record, but no felony convictions.
