In Dancer v. State, 715 P.2d 1174 (Alaska App. 1986) the Court recognized that "the Alaska Supreme Court has consistently held that the power to determine an appropriate punishment for an offense is vested exclusively in the legislature." The Court recognized that a court should grant "substantial deference" to the authority of the legislature to determine the appropriate punishment for crime.
