Taylor v. National Broadcasting Co

Taylor v. National Broadcasting Co., 22 Media L. Rep. 2433 (Cal. Super. Ct. 1994) Involved an unauthorized biography and television docudrama about actress Elizabeth Taylor. In August 1994, Elizabeth Taylor filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against NBC (the National Broadcasting Company). She claimed trademark infringement and invasion of privacy by a proposed docudrama based on an unauthorized biography of her life.' NBC succesfuly defended Taylor's biography The California Court concluded that: " the broadcast in question involves an expressive idea as opposed to purely commercial speech" which are protected by the first amendment.
