Valk Mfg. Co. v. Rangaswamy

In Valk Mfg. Co. v. Rangaswamy, 74 Md. App. 304, 537 A.2d 622 (1988), a dump truck with a snowplow hitch mounted on its front caused an automobile accident with the decedent. The decedent's widow and minor child filed suit against the manufacturer of the snowplow hitch alleging negligence and strict liability for "defective design." Id. at 313. A jury awarded the plaintiffs $2,500,000 on the strict liability count, and our Court affirmed the award. Id. at 308, 323. The Court concluded "that bystanders, such as the decedent in this case, are protected under the doctrine of strict liability in tort." Id. at 323.
